Kwazulu Natal Golf Courses

Wild Coast Sun

A real beauty of a course, this Robert Trent Jones Jnr designed course works its way along the spectacular Indian Ocean coastline just South of Durban.

Set in a rugged rocky terrain the course criss crosses its way across a large ravine formed over the years by the Umtamvuna River. The course has 6 par 3s, but dont let this lead you into a false sense of security, 2 of these par 3s have no fairway at all, you will have to carry the ball across the gorges in front of the greens.

On arriving at the 18th, your tee shot will be from an elevated tee where you will have to carry the dam in front, about 170 metres. Nerve jangling as this is, it will become even harder when you realise you are being watched by spectators from the balcony of the clubhouse. Should your tee shot not clear the dam, an old ships bell will be rung from the balcony.

Princes Grant Golf Course

Located on the shores of the Indian Ocean about 45 minutes North of Durban lies the Princes Grant Coastal Golf Estate.

The course opened for play in 1994, and in the years since has made every effort to put itself on the golfing map. It is now regarded as one of the finest courses in the country.

With its large undulating and sloping fairways, well shaped bunkers, multi tiered greens and sea views as a backdrop, Princes Grant is a blend of links and parkland golf that will prove to be a real test of golf for all level of players.

The signature hole on the course is the par 5, 15th, it runs parallel to the Ocean with some of the best views all the way to Umhlanga. On a good day you may well see dolphins in the sea playing their own games.

San Lameer Golf Course

This Championship course is the centrepiece to the San Lameer golf estate, built on one of the last wetlands in South Africa, the course was designed to avoid areas of sensitive vegetation and utilises the indigenous plants and shrubs as features on the course.

The course is quite a tight layout, so being able to hit down the middle will prove to be a real bonus here. The greens are kept in excellent condition all year round, fast and true. With lots of water hazards to navigate through, the course will prove to be a real test of your abilities.

The feature hole on the course is probably the par3, 4th hole which is almost a carbon copy of the 12th hole at the Masters in Augusta.

Selborne Golf Course

Positioned on the coast line of the tropical Indian Ocean, Selborne Golf Course, a former dairy farm that has now become one of South Africas premier golfing destinations.

A beautifully manicured course that works its way around the local vegetation, following the contours of the natural terrain offering spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and ocean. There is water in abundance on the course, coming into play on 15 out of the 18 holes.

The signature hole on the course is the 3rd hole, a par 5 where you tee off from an elevated tee with a fantastic view, the fairway is a sweeping dog leg which will allow the long hitters to go for it in two, the only worry now is the pond 50 metres short of the two tier green and more water to the left and behind the green.

Durban Country Club

Situated just a kilometre North of Durbans golden mile is Durban Country Club, formed in 1922, overlooking the Blue Lagoon estuary and the Indian Ocean, host to the South African Open on 16 occasions, more than any other club in the country.

With a links type feel to this Championship course, along with narrow fairways and steep slopes to greens, Durban Country Club will prove to be a real test of skill to even the most talented of golfers.

The third hole, a par 5 has been listed in many books and videos over the years as the greatest third hole in the World, golfers tee off from an elevated tee to a narrow fairway below that is guarded by dense bush on the right and a treacherous bunker on the left hand side. Once played you will understand how this has become the most popular hole on the course.

Beachwood Golf Course

The second course of the Durban Country Club, following amalgamation in the late 1990’s Beachwood has fast become one of the region’s most sought after golfing venues.

With the course following the natural contours of the land surrounding it allows for the narrow fairways to be flanked by high grassy mounds. With lots of strategically placed bunkers and water features coming into play, it will prove to be a memorable stop on any golfing tour.

Although the course runs parallel to the Ocean, the sounds of the waves crashing in will be heard more than seen due to the dense bush that protects the course, however a gap in the vegetation at 11 will allow for a great view along the unspoilt beach leading to Durban City centre.
